Amazon Charts Course Away From Google Maps

Amazon has released a new Maps API for Kindle Fire developers to promote homegrown mapping apps for its tablet platform.

The new API allows developers already using the native Google Maps API on Android to migrate easily to the Amazon software and includes features to enable embedded maps, custom overlays and interactive maps that users can zoom pan and switch between standard maps and satellite view.

This is Amazon’s second giant step away from Google since launching its new Kindle Fire HD, which now uses Bing as its default search engine.  The e-retail giant’s Kindle family of tablets and e-readers already shuns the Google Play content store in favor of proprietary content.
